Log Yard Supervisor

In this key role, you will oversee the safe and efficient operation of the log yard, ensuring the proper sorting and decking of logs to meet sawmill requirements. Essential Functions and Duties:
- Oversee the safe operation, cleanliness, and efficiency of the Log Yard, equipment, and personnel
- Ensure proper sorting and decking of quality logs to optimize sawmill efficiency
- Assist mechanics with inspections and washing of rolling stock to prevent failures
- Conduct detailed analysis for potential upgrades and continuous process improvements
- Coach employees, implement position rotations, and plan training to enhance skill sets
- Drive production and quality growth by implementing evaluated, safety-focused practices
- Assist with process advancement and actively contribute to the successful implementation of new equipment and products
- Evaluate species and diameter sorting accuracy, ensuring quality logs from the logger
- Collaborate with the plant manager to ensure log sorting meets finished product standards
- Understand sawmilling processes by spending time in the mill during each species change Assist with seasonal snow removal, road watering, and grading
Qualifications:
- 5+ years of supervisory experience in a log yard environment supporting softwood, hardwood, or plywood facilities
- Strong knowledge of safety rules and policies for log yard operations
- Familiarity with Inland Northwest timber species (e.g., Ponderosa Pine, Douglas Fir, Spruce, Cedar, etc.)
- Proficient in operating various forestry equipment (Wagner Log stackers, Heel Boom log loaders, front-end loaders, dozers, etc.)
- Basic knowledge of log scaling and quality control
- Understanding of modern heavy equipment, including Tier IV engines and ground-engaging implements
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills for scaling, sorting, and decking timber
- Moderate computer skills for record-keeping and producing weekly deck maps
- Ability to foster teamwork and effective communication within the team
- Physical ability to stand, sit, walk, and lift up to 75 lbs occasionally
- High School Education or equivalent
- Ability to pass background and drug screenings
